Kansas City Star: Sowers “trying to leap tall buildings”

March 28, 2010

By Steve Kraske

"...It was déjà vu last week meeting Democrat Tommy Sowers, who is trying to leap tall buildings to unseat long-time GOP incumbent U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson of southeast Missouri.

Sowers was in town for a fundraiser. He is a 30-ish military vet who is strikingly articulate. He’s spending weeks at a time sleeping on couches as he drums up votes in the largest congressional district in the state. He’s got a pick-up truck adorned with his name and a pair of dogs.

He is, in other words, the near-second coming of Republican Adam Taff, who came close to knocking off Democratic incumbent Cong. Dennis Moore in 2002.

It’s shaping up to be a tough year for a guy like Sowers, who’s still managed to raise some pretty good money.

“I am not going to take anything for granted,” Emerson wrote in a fund-raising letter.

That’s probably smart. Just ask KU basketball coach Bill Self."
