River Front Times: Tommy Sowers Celebrates Memorial Day Power-Walking Through “100 Mile Yard Sale”
May 28, 2010
Tommy Sowers would argue with our description of him "power-walking."
The former Green Beret -- and Democratic candidate for Missouri's 8th Congressional District
-- calls his hundred mile journey down Highway 25 this weekend a "road
march." As in the kind of military hikes in which troops are supposed
to keep a pace of four miles-per-hour all while lugging heavy
backpacks.
Sower's march this weekend coincides with the 12th annual "100 Mile Yard Sale" when people living between Jackson and Kennett along Highway 25 roll out
their finest castoff's for sale to the passing public.
Yesterday, Daily RFT caught up with winded Sowers as he heel-toed it past mile marker 15 of his journey.
Daily RFT: What are the hot items at this year's sale?
Sowers: Oh boy. I've seen a lot of clothes and jewelry. Lawn mowers are popular. So are antiques. Your readers should come on down this weekend. There are a lot of bargains.
What exactly is the point of your road march?
I spent
eleven years in the military, three of then overseas on Memorial Day in
hostile fire zones. I wanted to honor the men and women who are doing
the same this year for our country. I could have come out to this event
and cut a ribbon or shown up for the opening or closing ceremonies. But
this is a great way to really meet constituents. Not many other
candidates could -- or would -- do this.
You're saying incumbent Jo Ann Emerson isn't up to the task?
I'm not seeing her out here. I'll say that.
What's been the reaction from people you've met on the march?
They're
really surprised when my staff and I come marching up from the horizon.
They tell me that they're tired of the politicians in Washington. They
want new blood. I've heard that in Jackson, Delta, Dutchtown and
Gordonville. And I expect to hear the same the entire way.
You seem to really enjoy these physical challenges with your 3,000 mile odyssey
through the district back in February. What will be your next feat of
strength? Perhaps crabwalking your way to Washington if you win in
November?
I don't know about that. But, there will probably be a few more exercise. You've got to keep strong.
So what kind of bargains and bric-a-brac have you bought along the way?
Nothing
yet. I've seen some great stuff. But its hard to strap an antique
armoire to your back when you still have so many miles to go.
